Mike,
Have a good break ! Hope you make it there. I was there for a few days last
September. Worth hiring something to see the place even if days are short. Thanks in
advance for the figures.
Sent my bit to CC - quite strongly worded. One person so far has supported me. Not sure
which way Steve will go - he's taken some legal advice, which is positive for your case.
So,
if he does go with the other 2 reviewers - one of which is very positive (from Keith
here), there
will likely be a lot of flak. I think a number on the board are being too wary of this.
You can guess
how they will contort the whole thing if it comes out. Ben and Tom haven't weighed in yet,
but they will be supportive I'm sure. They weighed in strongly a week or so ago. Steve is
hoping to make a decision soon - so maybe by the time you're back. Steve knows he will
have to write something - hopefully from the whole board.
Sent on your GRL comment to Chris and Tom.
There is another bad paper potentially coming out in EOS by Esper et al (though not
with
Ed). Trying to get a copy from Keith. Keith is annoyed with Jan in what he's said, even
more by the acknowledgements. Problem for us is that Jan is in two of our EU projects.
At least Ed has dropped out this time - I think he's beginning to realise he was a bit
naive
with the first paper. He can't have believed it wouldn't have had much impact, but that is
what
he said to me back in October. Kevin laid into him at Amherst - Ray may have told you.
Again the paper was apparently reviewed !!!!
Jan talks about RCS and ABD without any reference to Keith - unbelievable.
If it does come out I would have a word with Ellen.
Forget about it all for Icelandic trip ! It's expensive there !
Cheers
Phil

Hi Phil,
Thanks for the update, and thanks especially for your support on the CC issue. MM are
clearly trying to stymie the publication of our response with delay tactics. A strongly
worded reply to the CC board list by you would indeed be very helpful at this point!
McIntyre and his elk are taking aim at the very nature of peer review here...
Its been snowy and cold here. Headed off to Iceland (!) tonight for the short vacation.
Might even be warmer there (at least they have thermal springs!). HOpefully, will have
revised figures from Scott by mid-afternoon and can make final checks on those, and send
confirmation on to you before leaving...
More later,
mike

Mike,
Got all the emails from you last night. I'll add in Gonzalez-Ruoco et al re the
series
in Figure 8. Ruddiman was done. I'll have all done by Monday, so once I have the
new Figs 5 and 8 from Scott, or you say one is OK or whatever, I'll enlist Tim's help
in putting all together in one big file and resubmit.
Snow here now - only 3 people in CRU so far, me, our Swede and Keith's new visitor
from Krasnoyarsk ! We seem to be the only ones who know how to cope with the snow.
My drive was about twice as long on the snow, but most people stayed at home, so the
roads are empty, if a little icy.
I'll forward you comment to Tom/Chris re SBetc. Also just received an email from
Steve
Schneider sent all the CC Board from McIntyre. Absolutely unbelievable what he is
saying
about reviewing your paper - not the content of the paper, but what he says he'll need
from
you to do it. I'm about to send a strong response to Steve. If reviewers asked for the
things
he wants no-one would want to do any reviewing and nothing would ever get published -
the whole system would just grind to a halt. I will briefly mention this new paper (SB)
- no
names, just that AGU/GRL didn't send it to any of us (you, me , Chris, Tom K. etc).
Have a good few days away.
Cheers
Phil

Hi Phil,
One additional small thing. The Ruddimann paper has appeared in press now:
Ruddiman, W.F., The anthropogenic greenhouse era began thousands of years ago,. Climatic
Change, 61, 261 - 293, 2003.
