date: Mon Mar 8 12:18:03 2004 from: Mike Hulme subject: Re: ruosteenoja manuscript to: Timothy Carter Tim, Yes, Tim did leave at the end of February, although he first alerted me to the likelihood in early December, confirmed in early January. He has left scientific research entirely and is planning on entering the Christian ministry. Quite what all the various factors were I don't know, but it was certainly unexpected by me. There were funding options open to him through 2004, but as always of a short-term nature. The JoC manuscript revisions are to be co-ordinated by Phil I believe. And CRU (Phil) will be seeking to maintain some continuity with the observed datasets he has been working on. This is not something now that I have any funding for. Tim did leave me with a manuscript re. the application of the ATEAM datasets for impacts analysis and he suggested it could form a Tyndall Working Paper. What is your view on this? Should we provide some (unpublished) document on how the ATEAM data could be applied? All in all, Tim's departure is a loss for us (me) and for CRU and he will not be replaced in a one-to-one sense. Phil in CRU will have to manage the data side. CRU are losing Jean next month when she moves to Exeter for WGII TSU. The implications of this for CRU's leadership are still being worked out I believe, although I am not party to the discussions. Here in Tyndall, we are preoccupied with our upcoming evaluation (in April, by a panel of 9 experts including Bill Clark and Steve Schneider who will make a site visit). If positive, then we will be invited to bid for another 5-years of funding from the research councils (Phase I ends Sept. 2005). I've got to figure out what role, if any, I want in Tyndall Phase II. The printed version has an error in Eq 1 on P17 (it's OK in the Web version). I was also wondering if you could shed some light on Tim Mitchell's seemingly abrupt departure. What does this mean for the data sets he created (e.g. for ATEAM)? I had some brief correspondence before he left, but this was more to do with an unfinished ATEAM manuscript. There is also a question about the submitted J. Climate paper. Will Tim be overseeing any revisions? I see we already had a review from Tom W., but that appears to have been sent direct by Tom rather than by the journal. I guess you must have sent me this; has it appeared in print or on the web in its final form? It would be useful for one of my students. Many thanks and best wishes for the New Year! Mike
