date: Thu Feb 25 18:23:36 1999 from: Keith Briffa subject: Failed NERC Fellowship Application to: saru@nerc.ac.uk Dear Dr Ruth I recently learnt (Mr. Vernon's letter, Your Ref. : App No 100, dated 15th Feb.) that I had not been successful in my application for a NERC Senior Research Fellowship. This letter indicated the possibility of getting some feedback regarding my application and it is in this context that I now write. It is true that I am very disappointed with the decision and I would appreciate any information regarding it. I note the recent publicity for increased NERC resources to "save established scientists from having to jump through hoops every two to three years" (David Brown quoted in THES,Feb.19) and it is ,therefore, also disappointing to hear that only one appointment could be made at my level for the coming year. I would be interested to know the successful candidate's name and field. I would also appreciate and any frank remarks that the Panel in general, or Sir John in particular, might care to make on the prospects, were I to make a future application. Thankyou for your trouble. yours sincerely Keith Briffa
