date: Wed, 31 Jan 2001 08:59:25 +0000 from: Paul Wilkinson subject: Climate change burdens of diarrhoea & water-related illness to: "M.Hulme" ** High Priority ** Mike, Today we plan to submit to the CLIVAR call our pre-proposal on the burdens of diarrhoea and water-related illness in relation to climate change. This is essentially the oultine project we sent last Novermber to EPRI. As you may know EPRI gave over their 2001 funding to CLIVAR, and we were encouraged to submit the diarrhoea proposal under this call. I was looking through the instructions for submission again last night and realized that we had overlooked the requirement that proposals should have the input of an 'ecologist' as well as health and climate specialists. I wonder if you have any suggestions for someone we could invite as a participant at this 11th hour? As you may recall, the plan is to look at diarrhoea notifications in relation to temperature and rainfall patterns for a number of (mainly) developing countires. In addiiton to changes in temperature, we would specifically be interested in droughts/periods of water stress, as well as periods of extreme precipitation associated with flooding. It would seem, therefore, that the ideal person would be an hydrologist or someone with expert knowledge about water availability and the areas of the world which are likely to experience water stress in future. Can you think of anyone reasonably senior who could help? At this stage, we only have to give a brief outline of the project and the costings, so we have time to sort out details of his/her involvement later. But ideally, we'd need a 1-side CV today. Sorry this is a last minture request, but we have only just realized our oversight. Regards, Paul
