cc: "Quinn, Rachel" , "Mike Hulme (E-mail)" date: Fri, 26 Oct 2001 11:46:26 +0100 from: "Goulden, Marisa" subject: Kate Hampton: Invitation to participate in Royal Society meeting to: "'info@foe.co.uk'" FOR THE ATTENTION OF KATE HAMPTON Dear Ms Hampton Hopefully you will have received your invitation to attend the Royal Society's meeting on Wednesday 12 and Thursday 13 December 2001 on "Climate Change: What we know and what we need to know". I have attached a copy of the programme and provided additional details of the meeting below. The Steering Group (chaired by Sir John Houghton FRS) would like to invite you to participate in this meeting and provide a short (5 min) response or comment following Roger Harrobin (BBC) who will be speaking on "Communicating climate change science" in session 7 of the meeting. I would be grateful if you could let me know as soon as possible if you would like to participate as a discussant/respondent. Dr Mike Hulme will be coordinating the content of the talks by the speakers and discussants/respondents and I will ask him to contact you if you agree to speak. The registration fee for the meeting will of course be waived for you, as a discussant, and we hope that you would be able to join the other speakers for a buffet supper on Wednesday 12 December. Aims of the meeting The timing has been designed to allow time for attendees and speakers to digest the IPCC's Synthesis report, the final part of the Third Assessment Report (TAR), which was released at the end of September. The aim of the meeting is to promote discussion among scientists, government, industry, NGOs and other stakeholders about the science and technology challenges arising from the TAR and how they might be met. We anticipate that the meeting will identify the gaps in the scientific knowledge from the perspective of all stakeholders and attempt to prioritise them. The RS will be publishing a report of the meeting, which will consist of a summary of the main issues and challenges from the talks and discussion. Programme details The meeting lasts for 2 days and has a total of 8 sessions. Each session will be split into 2-3 sub-sessions each with normally 1 main speaker (15 mins each) and 1-2 discussants providing alternative perspectives (5 mins each) and there will be plenty of time for discussion. Presentations on Day 1 will primarily be given by academics and will focus on our current understanding of climate change but also the main areas of uncertainty. On Day 2 stakeholders from government, NGOs and business will form the majority of the speakers. Content of talk For you information, the Steering Group have asked each speaker to address the following cross-cutting questions, which you might like to base your 5 min response on: * What will be the key issues and impacts that my sector will have to address? * What do we need in terms of further research and advice? * What action is my sector taking, what role will it play in climate change mitigation and what are the key adaptations that I must consider? * What costs and opportunities are associated with these mitigation and adaptation measures? I hope that this is all the information you require but please do not hesitate to contact me, or my colleague Rachel Quinn, if you would like further details.
