Mike,

I just didn't see how we could Phil's results in our analysis.    The 
agreement is good of course, and agrees well with our ice core records 
as well.
Not to mention the recent borehole thermometry work.

Still, we probably could and should try to do so in updated work.  David 
Bromwich has expressed interest in working together to do something even 
more definitive in the near future.  He's skeptical that the warming is 
as great as we show in East Antarctica -- he thinks the "right" answer 
is more like our detrended results in the supplementary text.  I cannot 
argue he is wrong. Writing a paper together with him to clarify all this 
would be useful, I think.

He's also separately working on a piece on the tropospheric trends.  
They strongly support our results.  I'd rather *not* be part of that 
because then there will be no question that it is independent work 
(which indeed it is).
