date: Mon, 04 Jan 1999 10:38:30 +0000 from: Trevor Davies subject: Research Income to: env.faculty@uea.ac.uk Happy New Year everyone. Our research overhead income over the last few years has been: 94/95 514K 95/96 428K 96/97 439K 97/98 414K 98/99 projected down Clearly we are on a "downward trend". Funding is often spiky - eg Framework IV, CSERGE 5-yr funding, etc, BUT this will NOT be a good position to go into the next RAE if the "trend" continues (this has already been pointed out by the two outside assessors which the university appointed to do a MockRAE on us - especially in the context of many of our rivals increasing their research funding). Moreover, it is research income overheads which gives us the opportunity for our own selective investment. If we don't recover our position, our investment plans will be meaningless. Framework V is a clear opportunity for us to start reversing the trend. We must do well in this Programme, and exploit other sources effectively. Now is the time for research groupings to revisit - & act upon! - the discussions they had around a year ago on "funding". Trevor (Summary report on the MockRAE will follow in a few days. Tone is that our general performance continues to be very good, but that there are a number of specific issues (including the above) which we should address). ++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Professor Trevor D.
