Any suggested changes/ additions? Should it go to Livewire and Nexus as well as Concrete? Rob, Adrian- have you got any better photos than the ones used before? If so, perhaps you could post (or, better still, e-mail) them to me? Adrian. *NEWS RELEASE* FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: FRIDAY 17TH NOVERMBER 2000 UEA Green Party Press Contact : Adrian Ramsay (Details not for publication) 01603 507792 a.ramsay@uea.ac.uk ENV lecturer to stand in general election ENV lecturer Rob Tinch is to stand as Green Party candidate in the forthcoming general election for the Norwich North constituency. Rob Tinch said: "I'm delighted to have secured the nomination and look forward to a strong campaign in Norwich North. We're giving people the choice to vote for what they really believe in, and our strong local election results this year show that many people across Norwich welcome that choice." Adrian Ramsay of SOC2, Chair of UEA Green Party, will be the Campaign Manager. He said: "Whilst the state of politics in this country at present makes apathy understandable, the degree of apathy among even my fellow politics students is very worrying. I hope that, at the very least, all students will vote in the forthcoming local and general elections and that many will consider getting actively involved because Greens across the country have shown that it is possible to get elected and have a real impact in fighting for a better future for everyone." Notes: (1) Profile of Rob Tinch: Rob is a lecturer in environmental economics in the School of Environmental Sciences at the UEA, where he researches resource management, waste and transport issues. He lives in Bawburgh with his wife Laure and baby daughter Elisa. He is a director of the Norfolk Waste Trust, and was heavily involved in the successful "Not In Our Names" campaign which resulted in the UEA becoming the first UK University to adopt an ethical investment policy. Rob stood for the Green Party in University Ward in the local elections this year, polling 10%, almost three times our result in 1999. He is standing for the Green Party because he believes that our way of life is unsustainable and that many groups in society -- such as senior citizens, the unemployed, and families on low incomes -- are unfairly treated by the current system. He wants to see changes in the way our society is organised so that all people are given the respect they deserve and have a decent and secure standard of living, and so that we tread more lightly on the Earth that will be home to our children and grandchildren. (2) A photograph of Rob Tinch is attached. (3) The Green Party will also be standing in Norwich South, the constituency containing UEA and the 'golden triangle'. Adrian Holmes will be the candidate. His profile is below and photo attached. Adrian was the Green candidate for Norwich South in the last two general elections and has stood in the last two European elections, as candidate for Norfolk in 1994 and most recently on the Eastern Region list last year. He has also stood many times in the local elections and presently works for a small computing company. He enjoys speaking/ debating at public meetings and taking part in phone-ins and television interviews. Since the last general election he has taken part in debates, including one on basic income at a public meeting, and on transport issues on TV. He has lobbied his MP at Westminster in support of the Energy Conservation Bill, and has knowledge of parliamentary procedures such as Early Day Motions, Private Members Bills and the process of getting a bill through Parliament. He is aware that if elected his primary duty as an MP will be to his constituents, and secondly to the Green Party. He is standing to bring important social and environmental issues on to the political agenda, as he believes they have been completely overlooked by this government, and he is very serious about getting elected. (4) Adrian Ramsay, Chair of the UEA Green Party and SOC2 student, will be the Campaign Manager for Norwich North and Norwich South. (5) UEA Green Party Secretary Ingo Wagenknecht of SOC1, an experienced Green campaigner and the national speaker on GMOs, will also be featuring strongly in the campaign. (6) The Greens will also be standing a full slate of candidates across Norwich in the Norfolk County Council elections in May, when they are confident that Rob Tinch will be able to build on his strong vote this year in University Ward. The Greens are also urging students to make sure that they are registered to vote so that they are not prevented from having their say. Any student unsure about whether they are registered and how to go about registering should phone the Elections Office of Norwich City Council on (01603) 212055/ 212053. Students on campus are automatically registered and will receive details about how to go about voting just before the election. (7) The UK Green Party has had more electoral success in the last two years than ever before. Not only have we now got Green MEPs, an MSP, GLAs and a Peer fighting for a sustainable, inclusive society with a good quality of life for everyone, but many Greens around the country are having a strong impact on local councils, and the local Green Party is very confident that it will win its first local council seats in the next two years.
