Tom,
Agree on Rachel Warren - her heart's in the right place, but not up to it. Doesn't
seem
to take advice that well either !
Good to hear about your CCDD renewal. I didn't get it to review, but I helped your
cause
by reviewing several very poor proposals !
Not surprised by Mike's lack of a reply - he seems too bogged down with
administration
and John S. to do much real research. All the paperwork here is getting out of control.
UEA
is changing to 4 big faculties (we'll be Science). It's supposed to save us money -
according
to Pricewaterhouse Coopers who UEA hired to assess how to run the University !! Unlikely
to have been cheap. Most of their report was about teaching, the comments about research
showed no understanding of how it's done. They said that getting the JIF (Govt. money for
new buildings/lab equipment etc) money was a high-risk initiative !! When was getting
~£15M high risk ! It got us the new building (ZICER) and LGMAC( new lab equipment for the
Lab. for Global Marine and Atmospheric Chemistry). UEA needs to fund some technicians
for the latter and some more support staff for the former. Buildings/equipment but no-one
to run them !
CRU will be changing soon. Jean is leaving end of March to take up the position of
WGII TSU lead - working at the HC, with Martin as WGII Chair. Her deputy at Exeter will
be Chris Sear. Post for 4 years, then I think she'll retire. All means that I'll take
over as
sole Director with Keith as Deputy. I'm negotiating with Trevor to get some support here -
i.e not to lose Jean's money. Hopefully will have someone good coming on the CRU staff
and also someone to do much of the day-to-day running (the work Jean has been doing).
Should
all be sorted out by the time I see you in April.
Chris Vincent will be Dean from August, when Trevor takes on his new PVC post for
research here at UEA ! Chris seems much more honest than Trevor - hopefully not famous
last wrods.
So busy times the nest few weeks getting the best deal. Seem to have got Mike Salmon
on the staff - almost. So no time to get Nino3.4 up on to the CRU web site. Remind me in
April.
Cheers
Phil

Oops. Too many 65s.
There is no retirement age in the USA, so I have no plans to retire
from NCAR. I got a renewal of my CCDD project, which is in
principle for Oct. 2004 thru Sept. 2007.
I will contact Janice re UK rules.
A while back I sent a note to Mike Hulme suggesting he might
like to pay me for helping them with their integrated assessment
work -- and to relieve the DOE grant. They seem to be floundering
there -- Rachel Warren seems to be totally hopeless (based on the
stupid questions she asks me and/or Sarah), but I am not going to
help them for nothing.
Predictably, Mike hasn't replied.
Have you looked at the new MAGICC/SCENGEN yet (I have not
seen you on the downloader list)? You should check it out.
Oxford should be interesting -- a nice small group.
Tom.
PS. I noticed that you still don't put the N3.4 SSTs on the CRU
web page as an alternate Nino index.

Tom,
I presume you meant Jan 18, 2005 ! In 1965 you would have been 25 - your heydey.
Mine was when I was 28 in 1970 !
Some people do work beyond 65, but the examples I've heard of have only been doing
teaching. If you want to check then email Janice. There may be a way - but she seemed
to think not. How long do you hope to go on working at NCAR?
It is good news on the renewal. Still to get the official letter yet, but that
should come
soon - unless as usual DoE send it by ship.
See you in Oxford in April.
Cheers

Phil,
Good news. You are correct, my 65th bithday is Jan. 18, 1965.
I thought retired persons were allowed to be employed up to
one-third time for the next 5 years?
