Successful bids are likely to be made by large consortia (first call now anticipated in May 2001) - key groups UKMO, SOC, Reading ESSC, CEH, BADC, CCLRC, BAS. Likely 7million will be spent on 3-4 projects. 2. Programme probably won't pay for infra-structure but much disquiet about this and NERC/EPSRC may have to review - looks like most institutions allocated SRIF to buildings, not to network/hardware. 3. 60-70 people there - looks pretty competitive 4. Am trying to find out what budget ESRC have for this programme - ENV/Tyndall may stand more chance through ESRC (AAL interested) although the ESRC budget almost cetainly lower. Visualisation should be within scope. Nothing obvious about e-science on the ESRC website. 5. Myles Allan was there trying to dominate proceedings with his idea for an ensemble of model runs running on home PCs (climateprediction.com) 6. The SYS 'Synchronised Environmental Monitoring' approach might be appropriate - no mention actually made at the meeting of 'new measurements' but an oversight I think. 7. Couple of existing projects held up as exemplars (PRISM and DataGrid - both EU I think) The NERC Consortium Bid I'm involved with may also be submitted (modified) within the e-science programme. Steve
