date: Thu, 21 Dec 2000 17:17:52 +0200 (EET) from: Atte Korhola subject: Re: PAGES synthesis to: Keith Briffa Hi Keith, First: I wish you the most pleasant Christmas time and a happy new year. There is very little published, quantitative stuff on the subject, yet much under work. Anderson et al. have a annual record of diatom diversity cahnges from a Swedish boreal lake with comparisons to your dendro records. ref: Anderson NJ, Odgaard B, Segerström U, Renberg I (1996) Climate-lake interactions recorded in varved sediments from a Swedish boreal forest lake. Global Change Biology, 2, 399-405. We have recently published one of the first strictly quantitative Holocene temperature reconstruction from a subarctic lake in Finnish Lapland that nicely shows LIA, Medieval Climatic anomaly and perhaps slight recent warming, yet the temporal resolution is only some 50 to 70 years. ref: Korhola, A., Weckström, J., Holmström, L. & Erästö, P. (2000). A quantitative Holocene climatic record from diatoms in northern Fennoscandia. Quaternary Research 54: 284-294. Find attached the key figure of the paper showing the reconstructed July T for the entire Holocene (temp.bmp). We also just submitted a paper with 5 to 10 years resolution, a record of diatoms, in which we connect the observed assemblage changes (as shown by PCA) with the local reconstruction of climate (using historical records, tree-rings series, lake and rive ice cover data etc...) as well as with the "Arctic warming" as shown by Overpeck et al. (1997) (Science paper). Our paper has been submitted to Glob. Change Biology quite recently and we do not know yet anything about its destiny. ref: Sorvari, S. Korhola, A. & Thompson, R. (2000). Marked aquatic ecosystem response to recent Arctic warming in Finnish Lapland. Global Change Biology (submitted). I include an electronic version of the paper to this mail (text + 5 cdr. figures), yet keep this still confidental. If you are interested about inclusion of its findings in your chapter, please contact us again and we could agree as how to proceed (its part of Sanna's doctoral thesis, so we must think how to proceed in the case you would be interested. I shall think some other publication, yet these are the one I have at the moment on my mind. Keep on going and see you soon in London in January.
