Hi Martin,
I've had a look at the data area you identified. Those temperatures
are definitely unrealistic, of course.
However, the new (yet-to-be-released) version 3.0 of the dataset does
not feature such excessions - at least, as far as I can determine.
For instance, for the (568, 240) Dec 95 datum:
CRU TS 2.10 = 68.6
CRU TS 3.00 = 9.4
For that decade (1991-2000), the range is now -54.6 to 39.2. A much
more convincing story, I hope you'll agree.
If I had to hazard a guess as to the source of these apparent errors,
I would first turn to the source observed dataset. This has been
extensively cleaned, QA'd and enhanced since 2002.
