date: Mon Jun 18 19:54:43 2001 from: "Ian Harris (Harry)" subject: Work to: Robert Wilby Rob, Below is a draft MoU for the proposed work. Comment at will - structure, content, realism, spelling... whatever. No doubt there are things I've misunderstood. If you print/view it in a monospaced font and it'll all line up. I'm charging the same daily rate I used for Elaine - hope that's alright. Note that Dave recommends not using HadCM2 greenhouse gas plus sulphate - "the sulphate runs are shit" is his no-doubt confidential opinion ;-) Cheers Harry ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ MEMORANDUM OF UNDERSTANDING WROK TO BE CARRIED OUT FOR CLIENT: Dr Robert Wilby BROAD DESCRIPTION OF WORK: Acquisition of extended European windows for model and reanalysis data, regridding of reanalysis data to model grid resolution, calculation of airflow indices. DETAIL OF WORK: 1. Acquisition of model data The following models will be used: HadCM2 - hcgg, hcgg2 HadCM3 - A2a, B2 The following parameters are available at daily timestep, 1961-2099. A subset will be agreed before extraction and processing begins. Suggested parameters have been marked (*) to preserve some kind of resonance between these and the NCEP Reanalysis data. HadCM2 hcgg, hcgg2: geopotential height at 1000HPa convective rainfall (not hcgg2) convective snowfall (not hcgg2) mean sea level pressure (*) total precipitation maximum temperature (*) minimum temperature (*) total rainfall (not hcgg2) total snowfall (not hcgg2) HadCM3 A2a/B2: convective rainfall convective snowfall total downward surface shortwave flux surface moisture flux - evaporation mean sea level pressure (*) net downward surface shortwave flux geopotential height at 500HPa, 700HPa, 850HPa (*500,850) total precipitation rate relative humidity at 500HPa, 700HPa, 850HPa relative humidity (*) subsurface runoff amount surface runoff amount soil moisture content snow amount specific humidity (*) surface heat flux large-scale rainfall rate large-scale snowfall rate total cloud in longwave radiation mean temperature at 1.5m (*) maximum temperature at 1.5m minimum temperature at 1.5m wind speed at 10m maximum wind speed at 10m 2. Acquisition of NCEP Reanalysis Data The following parameters will be acquired at daily timestep, 1961-2000: air temperature at 2m sea level pressure specific humidity at 2m relative humidity at 2m specific humidity at 500HPa, 850Hpa geopotential height at 500HPa, 850Hpa 3. Windowing and regridding A fixed window will be extracted. Exact co-ordinates are still being negotiated but will be at least 80N to 20N, 90W to 70E. The NCEP Reanalysis Data will be on either a 2.5¡x2.5¡ grid, or a T62 Gaussian grid. Both will be regridded to a 2.5¡lat x 3.75¡lon grid, provisionally using NCL routines from NCAR. All data will be made available as necessary, either as whole windows or as selected cells. 4. Calculation of Airflow Indices A client-supplied Fortran program, 'canflow', will be adapted and used to calculate airflow indices from each sea level pressure series (HadCM2 GG & GG2, HadCM3 A2a & B2, NCEP Reanalysis). COSTINGS AND TIMESCALES The different activities have been separately treated for clarity. 1. Acquisition of model data 2. Acquisition of NCEP Reanalysis Data (Note 1) 3 days spread over 2 weeks, @ £100/day £300 3. Windowing and regridding (Note 2) 5 days spread over 2 weeks, @ £100/day £500 4. Calculation of Airflow Indices (Note 2) 2 days spread over 1 week, @ £100/day £200 TOTALS 10 days spread over 5 weeks (Note 3) £1000 Notes Note 1 Activity 2 is necessarily dependent on the availability of data from an external source. At present there is no reason to suppose that this will present undue difficulties. Note 2 Activities 3 and 4 are necessarily dependent on the correct operation of unfamiliar external programs. At present there is no reason to suppose that this will present undue difficulties. Note 3 Unforseen circumstances may necessitate renegotiation of timescales. However, every effort will be made to stay within those quoted. PROJECT DATES Preparatory work has begun for activities 1 and 2. Client go-ahead by 22/6/01 would give an approximate finish date of end July.
